Dr. Maria Montessori brilliantly designed her preprimary class to meet the needs of children from 3 to 6 years.  By mixing the ages and individualizing work, we create a noncompetitive classroom where children can learn from observing and assisting one another.  Because the work they choose arises from a natural love of learning, and their own individual interests, children in a Montessori classroom learn to listen to their inner needs, and become caretakers of their own development  A happy hum of relaxed, productive activity characterizes the environment.

The classroom combines 8 curriculum areas for a well rounded educational experience.
These include a Practical Life area, comprised of  beautiful and inviting materials which foster motor skill development, as well as caring for self and environment; Sensorial activities, a wide array of creative manipulatives designed to stimulate organizational thinking and creativity; Math; Language & Reading; Science; Cultural Studies & Geography; Art; and Music.

In addition, Spanish classes occur weekly for all students.  We also have a strong focus on movement, and offer supplemental Yoga and Karate classes to augment our regular creative movement activities.

One thing that is specific to Auburn Montessori School is an ongoing appreciation and interaction with the outdoors.  We have always cherished our woods, trails, stone walls, and trees, and brought their beauty into our classroom. We are proud of our natural playground, our beautiful peace garden which the children have helped create and have access to at all times, watching butterflies, birds, and other wildlife. We care for animals indoors and out, including rabbits, fish, dogs, goats and the occasional chickens and ducks.  Research is now
espousing the importance of nature in the development of the human brain, and books like "Last Child in the
Woods" by Richard Louv, warn that children are deprived of these important experiences.  At Auburn
Montessori, we have always and will continue to include these experiences in our day to day routine.
"The environment itself will teach the child, if every error he makes is manifest to him, without the intervention of a parent or teacher, who should remain a quiet observer of all that happens."
Maria Montessori
Along with the above, we at Montessori are dedicated to bringing awareness of our place in the community, country and world to the children.  We work to help the children feel the importance of good citizenship and the anticipation of becoming the next stewards of our earth. To facilitate this, we bring many cultural activities and specialists to entertain and teach the children. We celebrate diverse ideals and explore lifestyles from different countries, often participating in ongoing community service projects such as Pennies for Peace or Heifer International.  Our children understand that peace begins at home, and we honor supportive behavior in our class daily.
